The History of Austin, Texas

Located along the Colorado River, Austin has not always been the bustling metropolis that it is today.

Austin has deep Native American roots. The location where the city currently resides was home to Tonkawas, Comanches, and Lipan Apaches. These groups camped alongside the river and hunted within the creeks in the area that is now known as Barton Springs.

It was in the late 1700’s that the Spanish migrated to this area where they set up temporary missions in order to teach their religion to others.

It was not until 1830 when the first traditional settlers decided to call this location home. They originally named the village Waterloo. In 1839 the village was made the capital of Texas. A city was quickly built up around this village and it was eventually named Austin after Stephen F. Austin better known as, "The Father of Texas."

Plans for the city were developed by Judge Edwin Waller. Many of his plans are still evident to this day. The “Avenue" and “Pecan Street” (now 6th Street) have remained Austin’s principal business streets for the past 150 years !

It was during the 1880’s that Austin really began to develop as a true community. The grand capitol building, at the time it purported to be the 7^th Largest building in the world, was erected in 1888. The building remains a prominent part of the landscape within the city.

In September 1881, the first public school opened its doors to the children of Austin. The University of Texas, Austin campus would shortly follow.

Another huge milestone for the City of Austin came in 1893 with the creation of the Great Granite Dam on the Colorado River. The dam created jobs for local inhabitants and hydroelectric power to the residents of Austin, Texas.

After the great depression, Austin emerged as a leader within the technology industry. Several laboratories and research facilities were constructed during the 1950’s. These facilities created jobs and literally drew people to the city.

It was during the 1970’s that Austin began to explore its musical roots in earnest. Musicians such as David Rodriguez and Willie Nelson emerged, putting Austin on the map. Musical festivals, local shows and theatres are now a massive component to the city of Austin.

The rest, as they say, is history.
