Sharing living
expenses with a roommate is an ideal way to stretch your housing dollar
and gain access to some of Austin’s more upscale apartments. It can also
be a lot of fun, provided you establish some ground rules.
Your Austin Apartment: Life
with a Roommate
Before you move
in, sit down with your roommate and brainstorm the best way to ensure
the relationship stays on track. Who will get the larger bedroom, if
there is one? Are overnight guests allowed? How will expenses be split?
These questions and others are best addressed long before move-in day,
ideally in a written document you will both sign.
Consider:
-
RENT: How much will each person pay and who will physically be
responsible for paying the landlord each month? What happens is one
roommate cannot pay the rent on time?
-
SPACE: Who will occupy the “better” room if there is one? Will that
person pay a larger percentage of the rent?
-
PARKING: How will parking be shared if space is limited?
-
CLEANING: Are you both neat freaks, slobs or one of each? Outline
how chores will be divided and avoid conflict. Discuss if dishes
must be washed immediately or can be left until the next day. Decide
if cleaning duties will be split or if you will or hire help.
-
FOOD: Will you each buy your own food or will you split the grocery
bill? Will the cost of cleaning supplies and toiletries be split?
-
GUESTS: Do both roommates entertain and if so, how will you deal
with conflicts? Are overnight visits permitted and if so, how many
times a week?
-
PETS: Yes or no?
-
NOISE: What time is lights out?
-
MOVING OUT: Should you sign a lease agreement or simply live
together as long as it works? Talk about it and put your agreement
in writing if need be. Outline how much notice each must provide the
other before moving out.
-
FIGHTS: Acknowledge that disagreements are inevitable and discuss
how best to deal with them.
-
TELEPHONE: Will you each have your own phone or will you share a
line? Is it best to use an answering machine or voicemail with
individual mailboxes for each room mate.
-
OTHER: How will shared expenses such as utilities be split? Will you
share an internet connection? How will damages to the Austin
apartment be dealt with?
-
DECORATING: How will common areas such as the living room and
bathroom be decorated? How will apartment expenses be divided?
